STEPHANIE'S NEWSLETTER
VOLUME 1, NO. 9
February, 2003
Aloha Friends and Family,

For the last several months I have been completely absorbed working on a new body of work for my show TIME FRAMES. The show opens with an artist's reception on Saturday, March 1st from 6pm to 8pm at Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao. I have taken a creative leap in my new oil paintings which I find both challenging and exciting. A direct result of this leap is a new sense of assuredness in my watercolors which makes them pop. I hope you enjoy this current work I am proud to say feels like my best work to date.

Time Frames Helps Raise Funds
for Mana'o Radio

Mana'o Radio is our new commercial free non-profit radio station. Tune into 91.5 on your FM dial to get the best mix of music on Maui. All the DJs are volunteers. They turn the island into a fabulously eclectic sound machine. It is inspiring to listen as musicians come together to create something so exciting and full of love.

During Time Frames, a show of my new work at Viewpoints Gallery, I will be working with Mana'o Radio to help raise funds for commercial free, quality radio. I have invited Alan Schwartz, a ceramic artist to share my show, feeling that his ceramic pieces enhance my new work perfectly. Both of us will donate a piece to be the prize in a drawing for Mana'o Radio. For a suggested donation to the station of $10, your name will be entered in the drawing. At the end of the show we will draw one ticket to win my painting and one to win Alan's ceramics. This is a great opportunity to purchase one of my paintings for $10 and help support a station we all love. You can't beat that!

Check out my whole show and get a ticket in the drawing at Viewpoints Gallery.

Wailuku, A Town with Charm

Wailuku, the Capitol of Maui, is undergoing a major facelift. Although this town had been allowed to become a little run-down in the past, it's yesteryear charm is being enhanced and capitalized on as new buildings are going up and old buildings are being renovated. You do not have to look hard to find some great gems.

Heading up to Iao Valley you pass a true diamond. The Bailey House Museum located in a restored plantation house offers a fabulous assortment of artifacts from Old Hawaii. Every time I go to the Bailey House I am amazed by their collection of feather work, clothes, and other objects from before the 1900s. Music legend, Uncle Sol, can be found playing music or helping in the perfect Hawaiian gardens filled with traditional plants.

The newest gem is located on Market Street. The Pacific Center of Photography was the brainchild of Maui's Michael Gilbert in collaboration with Epson. This beautifully renovated building holds the newest Epson printers for professional reproduction and features an ongoing art show which will continue to push the boundaries of art on Maui.

Looking for food, the two best places are across the street from each other. The Maui Bake Shop sells the best pastries on the island. A true French chef spends all night creating fresh, authentic, buttery treats. This little bake shop is also good for an inexpensive soup and sandwich lunch. Close by is Cafe Romantica. Here you can get excellent vegetarian food with an Indian flavor inspired by a chef with roots in India. He is also a fantastic pastery chef and many of his dishes center around filo dough.

The Arts on Maui

Mark your calendar. Saturday March 1st, 6:00pm to 8:00pm, Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao hosts a reception for Time Frames a show of new works by Stephanie Sachs and Alan Schwartz. This is a benefit for Mana'o Radio with great live music and edible creations by the artists.

Saturday and Sunday March 15th and 16th. The Lahaina Town Action Committee presents Seafest. Held under the Banyan Tree in Lahaina, this is always a fun event, with great music, food and lots and local crafters. The shadiest place in Lahaina.

Friday and Saturday March 7th and 8th, New Shanghai Circus will be at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center Center's Castle Theatre. Everyone loves this circus, whose roots go back 2500 years.

March 8th to April 5th Schaefer International Galery at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center presents Art Maui the largest juried show on the island. The Opening Artist's Reception will be held on March 8th at 4:30p.m.

Four Seasons Reopens The Artists Program

The Four Seasons opened this year with some new artists adding even greater dimension to a wonderful program. Our manager, Lucia Hendreichs, has added new photography, glass and jewelry. This will be my fourth year participating in this program which highlights so many wonderful Maui Artisans.

You will find me at the event every other Wednesday (March12th, March 26th etc.) from 8:30am to 1:30pm in the lower lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel. My new group features photography, ceramics, silks, jewelry and even a milliner.

The program is open every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 8:30am to !:30pm. I believe it is the only show of this quality where you can meet the artisans.

Time Frames Artist Statement

Daily, I swim. The azure water surrounds my body as I move, peacefully mesmerized by the light playing on the water. Gently my body slices through the water, disturbing the surface only enough to make the light softly dance on the ripples. I am in a gliding meditation which only takes place when my mind is absolutely in the present.

Time Frames is a show of works inspired by the need to capture elemental feelings and fleeting moments that would otherwise be lost. It is about the beauty and peacefulness one feels when totally submerged and immersed in the pleasures of light and color at one particular moment. It is about being in the present.

What I would like to do in this show is share with you what I was feeling and seeing during these fleeting moments. Most of the paintings are fairly large to allow you to be surrounded and engulfed by the energy I have tried to capture. Put down your cameras for a while and let me be a different kind of lens for you. I can not only capture a moment but I can capture emotion and energy as well. Enjoy!
